The Port of Baltimore National Maritime Day Committee is pleased to host a National Maritime Day Commemoration, Saturday May 18, 2013 at 10:00AM Aboard N.S. Savannah, in the Helen Delich Bentley Port of Baltimore!  Pier 13 Canton Marine Terminal is Open for Visitors at 10:00A.M.  The National Maritime Day Commemoration Ceremony aboard the N/S Savannah commences at 11:00A.M.

The USMMA KP Alumni Chesapeake Chapter  will host a Crabcake Luncheon aboard the N/S Savannah in the Passenger Dining Room at 12:00P.M.  Pre-payment $ is Required for the luncheon only! 

All are welcome to attend the National Maritime Day events on Pier 13 from 10:00A.M. to 3:00P.M. NO $ CHARGE!   

Event Description:  Our event is hosted at Pier 13, Canton Marine Terminal, 4601 Newgate Avenue, Baltimore, MD 21224
Pier 13 is open for Visitors from 10:00AM to 3:00PM.  Our event features a number of activities including, a Port-wide Maritime Exposition & a Career Fair.  Ship Tours will be provided aboard the N.S. Savannah, & all participating vessels including: (subject to change) a Moran tug, Baltimore City Fire Department Fireboat, USCG vessel, US Army Transport tug CAT LAI, Association of Maryland Pilots - Pilot Boat, Maryland Department of Natural Resources fast response vessel, Baltimore City Police Department Marine Division response vessel, USMMA Training Vessel - T/V LIBERATOR, NOAA research vessel Bay Hydro II, with additional vessels to be confirmed.

Special Presentations include:

10:00AM to 3:00PM - TEACH FLEET Presentation - the world’s largest Lego Ship Model Collection, geared for K-12 STEM.  TEACH FLEET: Think Big, Dream Big, Build Big!

10:00AM - SS UNITED STATES Conservancy presentation by Susan Gibbs, onboard NS SAVANNAH

10:15AM - Atoms for Peace, a 1950’s promotional short by the Atomic Energy Commission, looping

11:00AM – Maritime Day Commemoration Ceremony including Bell Ringing & Wreath Laying.  Webcast provided by Maritime TV.  

-  Port of Baltimore Welcome: Congresswoman Helen Delich Bentley – Past Chairman, Federal Maritime Commission  
-  National Maritime Day - Presidential Proclamation: David T. Matsuda – Maritime Administrator

Additional presenters include: Paul “Chip” Jaenichen – Deputy Maritime Administrator, and RADM James Helis, Ph.D. – Superintendent, USMMA.  Colors Honors provided by NJROTC Cadets from the Baltimore Maritime Industries Academy, USMMA Midshipmen, NJROTC Cadets (including Drum & Bugle Corps) from the Delaware Military Academy and others!  Music of the USMMA Midshipman Regimental Band!  Wreath laying / Bell Ringing / Water Cannon and Ship cannon salute!

-  All Kings Point Alumni interested in speaking about Maritime or Military Careers.  Share your Kings Point Experience!

Description:  Our event is hosted at The Maritime Institute of Technology and Graduate Studies (MITAGS), 692 Maritime Boulevard, Linthicum Heights, Maryland 21090.  We begin with a Continental Breakfast “Meet & Greet”, followed by a forum of Maritime and Military career professionals.  Our speakers will provide a brief overview of their “Kings Point Experience” and their careers after graduation.  All of our participants will have opportunities to speak with our presenters one-on-one for a personalized addressing of their questions.  We will enjoy a delicious 3 entrée buffet luncheon in the Conference Center main dinning room.  Our program will close with our special cake cutting ceremony, and a “receiving of the Class of 2017” by the 50 Year Legacy Class of 1967!

All attendees - RSVP TODAY!  Kings Point Alumni Mid-Atlantic Region Chapter Presidents and all KP Alumni who are interested in making a presentation are requested to contact us ASAP.  Your partnership efforts will be appreciated!

In honor of Veterans Day, and feature a "Star-Spangled 200” - War of 1812 Bicentennial observance.  A KP Alumni Welcome for RADM James Helis, USMS – Superintendent, U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, speaker.  Our Thursday evening event begins at 4:30PM with a Hosted Tour of the MITAGS Simulator Technology Center. RSVP Required!  At 5:30PM our Social Hour / Cash Bar features * 30 Industry Table Top Exhibits * & our “Business Development - Card Exchange - Networking Opportunity!  ”Industry Table Top Exhibitors and Program Advertisers will be presented in our Event Program Brochure.

It is my pleasure to issue the USMMA “Strategic Plan 2012-2017.”  This plan is the culmination of extensive outreach to over 800 Academy stakeholders, including midshipmen, faculty and staff.  I would like to personally thank everyone for their participation in virtual and in-person outreach sessions and the thoughtful comments received during the process and in response to the draft strategic plan provided for public comment.  We received over 300 comments from 96 respondents for consideration.
The Strategic Plan 2012-2017 provides us with a sound, clear vision for the Academy’s future, but the most critical work – of turning this overall strategy into specific actions – is yet to be done.  It is my intention to move forward immediately on the recommendations.  In fact, I met with the USMMA Strategic Planning Steering Committee on Wednesday, July 25, 2012 and received excellent initial ideas on ways to further engage the campus community and develop short and long-term priorities.  I will be organizing further outreach events with midshipmen, faculty and staff in the near future to receive additional ideas and priorities. 
The strategic plan is available at http://www.usmma.edu/.  It is a large document so you may wish to have the newest version of Adobe reader in your computer.  I look forward to implementing the Strategic Plan 2012-2017.

Support Midshipman Cowden's Family

Our thoughts and support go out to the family of Colorado Midshipman Weston Cowden (KP 2015). His father, Gordon was one of the twelve innocent people killed in the senseless and brutal theater shooting in Aurora Colorado on July 20, 2012.

To All Houston Alumni,
In light of the recent tragic shootings in Aurora, Colorado it is important that we reflect and appreciate our families, friends and our fellow KPers more than ever.  I am sure many of you are aware by now that one of the victim's of the Aurora shootings was the father of a class of 2015 midshipman.  Gordon Cowden, Age 51, was killed in the theater while attending the Batman premier with his two daughters.  His son Weston Cowden is a member of the class of 2015 at USMMA.  The Kings Point Club of Washington has taken the lead and organized a fundraiser for the Cowden Family.  They have set a goal of $25,000.  If you are able to give, please give generously to this worthy fund.

Topic: Transitioning New Superintendent  & Academy Administration Realignment
Conference Call Speaker: Joel Szabat - Executive Director, MARAD
Greetings Fellow Chapter Presidents: Please join us for a Conference Call scheduled for FRIDAY July 6, 2012 12:00PM – 12:45PM E.D.T. 
This purposeful and timely call will feature as speaker Joel Szabat – Executive Director, MARAD.  The subject will be the transitioning of the new Superintendent and the realignment of the Academy’s organizational structure.

The Directors of the KPA-CPA had the pleasure of a Conference Call meeting with Joel on TUE June 26th, and felt that the presentation and detail provided was excellent.  We therefore felt that it was important that ALL of our Chapter Presidents should benefit from the same presentation.  This will then enable our Chapter Presidents to factually address their Chapter Memberships.
Joel Szabat – Executive Director, MARAD, has provided to us an official statement from the Department of Transportation about the realignment that we can distribute, and use as a basis for discussion with our Chapters and other alumni.
”As Secretary LaHood announced yesterday, Colonel (ret.) James Helis, Ph.D., will be joining the Academy as the new Superintendent in late July.  To assist in the transition, the Academy’s organizational structure is being streamlined to better meet the needs of the midshipmen.  As a result, there will now be three reporting chains: academic, administrative, and regimental.  A few functions will remain in the immediate office of the Superintendent.”
”A Deputy Superintendent position will be re-established to provide senior operational support for the Superintendent.  There are no changes in the academic chain.  The regimental chain has been expanded, based in part on feedback from parents and midshipmen, and the administrative functions have been consolidated to improve coordination.”
”The new Superintendent will have the benefit of this new streamlined structure when he begins his tenure.  This streamlined structure, along with the new strategic plan, will put the Academy on a more stable footing going forward.”

During our telcon this morning, Maritime Administrator Matsuda expressed his appreciation, on behalf of the Administration, for the opportunity to work with Kings Point Alumni Chapters to help identify and select Colonel Helis and Kings Point’s Superintendent.  He further stated, that early in the process, many of you spoke directly with Secretary LaHood, Deputy Secretary Porcari, and Maritime Administrator Matsuda and provided valuable input for the recruiting search.  Some of you also participated directly in the screening and selection as well, meeting the final candidates and providing advice to the Maritime Administrator on a selection.
This communication effort and outreach is the objective of our Mission Support for Kings Point.

We invite you to review and comment on the draft USMMA Strategic Plan (2012-2017) by July 4, 2012.   The USMMA Strategic Planning process was launched on March 13, 2012 by Interim Superintendent Dr. Shashi Kumar and US Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood during a Town Hall meeting with midshipmen, faculty and staff.  This was the beginning of an extensive outreach process to gather feedback and insights for the USMMA Five-Year Strategic Plan.
Since that time, we have held outreach sessions with the USMMA campus community, as well as representatives from the Maritime industry, alumni, parents and leaders in the Great Neck Community.  So far, we have received feedback from more than 800 people with ties to King Point, and we look forward to hearing from even more over the next few weeks.
The Strategic Plan articulates why the Academy matters, its importance to the Nation and the values that drive its success.  We want to thank those who participated in one of the outreach sessions and encourage everyone to review the draft plan as we near the end of the strategic planning process.  We encourage you to forward this notice to your colleagues.
